My story
I am a graduate of the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and a member in good standing of the CSNN Alumni Association; so my designation is R.H.N. (Registered Holistic Nutritionist) in Ontario and C.H.N.C. (Certified Holistic Nutritional Consultant) in Quebec. I am an active member of the Association des Naturopathes Professionnels du Québec, which makes me responsible for doing my job to the standards of excellence imposed by these organizations.
But that hasn’t always been my profession…
In fact, before health became my passion, personally and professionally, I worked in IT for 20 years. Quite a change of direction!
Here’s how it all happened…
My diagnosis
I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at 21. I remember sitting in the doctor’s office and asking him lots of questions about the causes of this disease. The responses received were vague and unsatisfactory. Maybe it’s hereditary? The stress? When I brought up the idea of nutrition, I was immediately told that it had nothing to do with taking my meds and everything would be fine.
That’s what I did. And my life was all but okay.
My energy level fluctuated constantly. The pain and discomfort often kept me from spending time with my family and friends. I no longer enjoyed doing my favorite activities. My mood was rather gloomy. My illness isolated me and affected all aspects of my life. I was getting really discouraged and worried about my future. How long can I work? How would I support my family? The stress and anxiety I was experiencing contributed to the inflammation of my ulcerative colitis, which often landed me in the hospital. My life was completely out of control and it was very difficult for me; it is as if I had lost a part of myself. Everything that was once my reality was no longer part of my everyday life. I was destined to take medication and feel bad and uncomfortable, even on my best days.
Although the medication seemed to control some symptoms, I knew it was not a long term solution. My body would stop responding to the current dose of medication and at that point the dose would be increased. Relying on medication to control my disease was not the answer. The medications masked the cause of my condition, which only pushed me toward another medical diagnosis and more prescription drugs.
The better way
Just over 15 years ago, my mission was to get rid of drugs and take my life back!
It was not easy.
I did a ton of trial and error, hundreds of hours of research, and spent thousands of dollars.
And now?
For the first time in over 20 years, I have no symptoms and I have regained the will to live! With the right diet, healthy lifestyle, and supplements, I took control of my disease. It’s not her who decides anymore, it’s me!
My journey was not easy and I had to be patient but I learned so much! I wish someone could teach me what I know today, 20 years ago. The truth remains that there is very little help and resources for those suffering from inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Often, those who have it must try to find ways to cope on their own.
This is the reason why I do what I do.
I will end with this
